ARTISTS HONORED FOR CREATING TOUCHABLE ART FOR THE BLIND

St. Augustine, FL - (Oct. 9).  The St. Augustine Art Association celebrated the opening of the 11th Annual Tactile Art Show on Friday, October 5, with the presentation of artistic achievement awards by show sponsor representative Mary Cay Brock.

Mari Carmen won the Jean Wagner Troemel Best in Show prize for her mixed media assemblage "Earth's Jacket."  The whimsical creation was made with moss, banana leaves and grass. "It's 100% recyclable," stated Carmen, a first-time exhibitor at the St. Augustine Art Association.

Jill Cerulli won First Place for "Read," a wood assemblage.  Second Place was awarded to Almadean Williams for "Winter Gatherer," a mixed media figure. Amy Dove received the Third Place prize for "Dreadlocks, Knots & Net," a fiber wall hanging.  Scarlett Gieger's "Lithic Fingerprints" fiber creation was recognized with the Nancy Garrard Best Fiber Art Award, sponsored by the Textile Arts Guild of St. Augustine.  Honorable Mentions were given to Virginia Pledger, Don Gieger and Jerry Peters.

Darlene Laibl-Crowe and Jean Light Willis judged the exhibit of all touchable art. "Jurying together was an enlightening experience because we each brought our own 'sense-abilities' to the process," said Jean Light Willis, artist and founder of the exhibition.  "Although we live in a visual world, we still need to touch it to get the full picture," said Laibl-Crowe, program administrator for the Florida Deaf-Blind Association, who is deaf and blind. The judges praised the artists for reinventing their media to reach a wider audience.

Sponsored by Community First Credit Union, the Annual Tactile Art Show is produced in partnership with the International Art Education for the Blind/Art Beyond Sight initiative to make the visual arts more accessible.  Students from Florida School for the Deaf and Blind created Braille labels for the exhibit and will participate in guided tours as part of their independent mobility training.

The 11th Annual Tactile Art Show is on display through October 28, at 22 Marine Street.  Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.  For information call the Art Association at (904) 824-2310 or visit www.staaa.org.

Who was the Renaissance Man?

Who was the Renaissance Man?

The late Thomas Glover W. sadly passed away in May leaving the art community seriously empty. To commemorate Glover’s work the St. Augustine Art Association will launch its new season with a featured exhibition including various works to show off the many facets and innovative instincts of this great man.

Glover was born in Italy and adopted then raised in Michigan, and Washington D.C.  He graduated from Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. Glover also once wrote for a column named “The Furtive” and worked for the Smithsonian as a herpetologist, branch of zoology dealing with reptiles. Marianne Lerbs, Glover’s wife, also artist and musician, met Glover in 1992 and then married in 2007 after staying friends for eight years. “He was a decent guy with old-fashioned values that always wanted to go his own and he was a rebel, “said Lerbs.  “We had 14 intense and beautiful years together. I would not change a minute of it,” she says.

“He literally changed his surroundings, building furniture, carving guitars and creating the St. Augustine Beach Sculpture Garden, his greatest achievement,” Lerb says. In 2009 this dream of the garden became real for Glover. St. Augustine Beach City Commission approved a $10,000 expenditure which helped pay for building slabs, sites for lighting, and security for the park.

“It was always exciting to see Thomas’ works appear in our gallery and throughout the community,” said Elyse Brady, Administrator, St. Augustine Art Association.

The retrospective, curated by Lerbs and Kevin Lang, opens during First Friday Art Walk, September 7, 5 to 9 p.m., in the South Gallery at 22 Marine Street. It runs through October 2, 2012. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. and Sundays 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Welcome to our 89th Season!

A remodeled kitchen and gleaming gallery welcome you to a new season that offers artists plenty of opportunities to participate in an array of new and popular juried exhibitions. September opens with the Fall Members Show, followed by the annual Tactile Art Show for the blind in October, Viva Florida in December and the Big Red Art Show in February, among others. Prize awards for artistic excellence are given every month and art sales in the gallery have been outstanding.  Take advantage of the great exposure you'll gain by displaying your work in the St. Augustine Art Association.  Download the 2012-2013 Calendar here.  Receiving for the Fall Members Show takes place Sept. 4 & 5 at noon.

FLOR500 -  We encourage artists to create work for the statewide FLOR500 Participatory Art Project that commemorates the 500th Anniversary of Florida's founding in 2013.  Artists may select one of 500 wildflowers as inspiration for original artwork.  Digital images of the work will be incorporated into the state biology curriculum.  Selected originals will be displayed in a special FLOR500 exhibit at the St. Augustine Art Association in the fall of 2013.  The deadline to enter is coming up in October so don't delay.  Visit www.flor500.com for details.
