Who was the
Renaissance Man?
The late Thomas Glover W. sadly
passed away in May leaving the art community seriously empty. To commemorate
Glover’s work the St. Augustine Art Association will launch its new season with
a featured exhibition including various works to show off the many facets and
innovative instincts of this great man.
Glover was born in Italy and adopted
then raised in Michigan, and Washington D.C.
He graduated from Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. Glover also once
wrote for a column named “The Furtive” and worked for the Smithsonian as a herpetologist,
branch of zoology dealing with reptiles. Marianne Lerbs, Glover’s wife, also
artist and musician, met Glover in 1992 and then married in 2007 after staying
friends for eight years. “He was a decent guy with old-fashioned values that
always wanted to go his own and he was a rebel, “said Lerbs. “We had 14 intense and beautiful years
together. I would not change a minute of it,” she says.
“He literally changed his surroundings,
building furniture, carving guitars and creating the St. Augustine Beach
Sculpture Garden, his greatest achievement,” Lerb says. In 2009 this dream of
the garden became real for Glover. St. Augustine Beach City Commission approved
a $10,000 expenditure which helped pay for building slabs, sites for lighting,
and security for the park.
“It was always exciting to see
Thomas’ works appear in our gallery and throughout the community,” said Elyse
Brady, Administrator, St. Augustine Art Association.
The retrospective, curated by Lerbs
and Kevin Lang, opens during First Friday Art Walk, September 7, 5 to 9 p.m.,
in the South Gallery at 22 Marine Street. It runs through October 2, 2012. Gallery
hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. and Sundays 2 to 5 p.m.
